The Pheasant Plucker Bill Daly Books

Frank McClure, the eccentric son of an Ayrshire publican and his French au pair, applies to join MI6 to escape from his humdrum existence. When he is assigned to an undercover surveillance mission in Montpellier, he stumbles upon a racist cell who are planning to exact indiscriminate revenge on Islamic targets in Britain and France in retribution for the terrorist atrocities in New York, Madrid and London. As Frank races against time to warn his superiors of the impending attacks, various anomalies in the true purpose of his mission come to light and elements of drug trafficking and pornography compound to muddy the interaction between senior figures in MI6 and their French counterparts. The Pheasant Plucker is a compelling blend of humour, political intrigue and romance, with several intricate plot twists which will keep the reader guessing until the final denouement.
The Pheasant Plucker Bill Daly Books
At the outset, Frank McClure seems innocent, even harmless - a friendly, pleasant, bilingual man, mildly offended by various grammatical infelicities and having the misfortune to be brought up in a pub called The Plucked Pheasant. When he applies for and, to his surprise, gets a job with MI6, he moves to France, becomes Jérôme Dumas, and is pulled further and further into plots and skulduggeries which just keep on thickening. He also grows into his role and shows unsuspected dexterity in avoiding being eliminated, imprisoned or otherwise taken out of every equation in which he's an unwitting element. His story is funny, clever, skilfully written and leads to the unlikeliest and yet totally satisfying of happy endings. It's an excellent, very enjoyable read which draws you in and has you rooting for this everyman 007.Product details

The Pheasant Plucker Bill Daly Books Reviews
Spy stories are not generally one of my preferences, but my taste in comedy is for satire and black comedy so I found much to enjoy in this unusual novel. Frank McClure, from an obscure town in south west Scotland, is roped in by the British spy service MI6, supposedly to keep tabs on British residents in Montpellier, France - because he has fluent French taught him by his French mother, (now married again to a Chinese man and living in China). A hilarious sequence of events ensues, leading us back and forth between Montpellier, Paris and Scotland/ northern England in pursuit of Frank's ex-employer, with the assistance/obstruction of Frank's opposite number a beautiful young woman working for the French spy services.
